Game-winning field goal pushes Cardinals past – Sports Illustrated

GLENDALE — The Arizona Cardinals grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat with a 17-15 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, winning with a game-winning field goal as time expired.

Arizona now improves to 3-4 on the season with the win.

The Cardinals actually turned the ball over on the first drive of the game, as Tier Tart intercepted a Kyle Murray pass before it was eventually knocked down and recovered by Michael Wilson in one of the weirdest sequences you’ll see.

After a punt, Los Angeles thought it was close to scoring on a big pass to Jalen Reagor — before Reagor ran the ball into the end zone to give the Cardinals possession back.

First blood was spilled on the opening kickoff of the second game by Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker, who scampered 59 yards to put Los Angeles up 3-0.

Arizona was able to answer a ten-play, 79-yard drive (which almost ended with a fumble by James Connor) with a short Greg Dortch touchdown reception to put the Cardinals ahead 7-3 with 5:40 left in the second quarter.

Dicker made another field goal as time expired in the first half to cut Arizona’s lead to 7-6 entering the locker room.

It was a fairly uneventful third quarter for both sides, though Los Angeles threatened to find its first touchdown of the night before a Garrett Williams fumble forced Dicker to go for a third (and successful) field goal attempt, pushing the Chargers back into the lead 9-7 with 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

For the Cardinals, the fourth quarter started with a bang thanks to Murray scrambling for a 44-yard touchdown to put Arizona back up 14-9.

Not long after, Dicker scored again for Los Angeles – this time from 47 yards – to give Arizona a 14-12 lead with over 12 minutes left in the game.

Facing fourth-and-short with less than five minutes remaining, the Chargers successfully converted and kept the clock running on a drive that started at the one-yard line.

Dicker booted a 40-yard field goal to put the Chargers back in front 15-14 after a 15-play drive.

Needing a drive to win, the Cardinals quickly went to work.

A 33-yard pass to Conner put Arizona first in field goal position with 1:30 left, ensuring the Chargers were forced to burn all of their remaining timeouts.

After a knee by Murray cut the clock down to two seconds, the Cardinals threw out Chad Ryland, who kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired.

The Cardinals will travel to play the Miami Dolphins in Week 8.
