Fort Madison, Ia. (KHQA) — The City of Fort Madison Fire Department will allow controlled burning of leaves only from Nov. 4 through Dec. 1 without an application for a temporary burn permit, subject to the following restrictions:
- Outdoor leaf burning is only permitted from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset.
- No open burning shall be permitted on public streets, alleys or sidewalks.
- The location of the burning area is not less than 50 feet from any structure or not less than 15 feet from any structure if an approved waste burner is used.
- A competent person must constantly attend all fires until they are completely extinguished.
- The fire chief may prohibit any or all outdoor burning when weather conditions or local circumstances make outdoor burning unsafe.
- Any fire causing inconvenience or reported discomfort must be extinguished immediately.

Applications for temporary fire permits for any purpose must be obtained from the City Fire Department.
Adherence to and compliance with these described procedures shall be of positive benefit to the citizens of Fort Madison.
