Eleven former Republican Party officials and government lawyers have expressed concern over Elon Musk’s recent announcement that he is giving away $1 million every day to registered voters in battleground states. The officials are calling on Attorney General Merrick Garland and the Pennsylvania Attorney General to investigate the legality of Musk’s sweepstakes.
Legal experts have pointed out that Musk’s initiative could potentially violate laws against paying people to register to vote. The former officials, in a letter obtained by The Washington Post, stressed the need to review payments made by the Elon Musk-founded America PAC to voters in Pennsylvania and other states.
The letter said, “We urge you to investigate whether payments to America PAC are prohibited voter registration payments. The payments, which are framed as rewards for signing a petition or referring voters, are primarily aimed at registered voters. The petition webpage includes links to voter registration websites for each state along with the payment offer. Additionally, signature and referral payments are only available until the voter registration deadline.”
Elon Musk recently announced the first million dollar winner at an event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he handed a huge check to a Trump supporter. The second winner was announced at an event in Pittsburgh, with Musk stressing the importance of early voting.
The Justice Department confirmed it had received the letter from the former employees, but declined to comment further on the matter.
