Flu has spread to South Carolina among the worst in the United States this year: what to know – WBTV

Rock Hill, SC (WBTV) – Flu has spread at a rapid pace in South Carolina this season, especially in late January, CDC reports.

Flu activity in South Carolina was at the highest level-“very high”-for the week of January 19-25, 2025. These are the latest data available on the US Weekly Flu Map in the United States.

By the second until the last week of January, South Carolina was one of the six states with the distribution of flu ranked at the top of the “very high” category, which is considered level 13. These countries include: Tennessee, Louisiana, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

This week, New York was also experiencing very high flu.

The CDC estimated at the end of January that there were at least “20 million diseases, 250,000 hospitalizations and 11,000 influenza deaths this season this season.”

South Carolina Flu has spread “high” for weeks

The Flu Season in South Carolina began to gather in early December 2024, with moderate influenza reporting the week of December 1st. The propagation of the flu has increased in the coming weeks, according to CDC.

The influenza activity was ranked “High” until December 15, 2024. The spread of the flu was rated very high until next week and remained very high throughout January.

South Carolina moved to the highest level of influenza, distributed until the week of January 13, 2025.

It was not clear immediately whether the propagation of the flu in South Carolina had declined in the weeks of January 25. This data is expected to be published in the coming weeks.

North Carolina is not too far

North Carolina’s influenza activity did not start gathering only later in December. The spread of flu in the country is considered low by the week of December 15, 2024, when activity is considered moderate.

Until next week, the spread of the flu was high in North Carolina. The level of flu activity of the state is considered high in the next few weeks before upgrading to very high until the week of January 19, 2025.

Flu is spread in other countries

Louisiana and Washington had high levels of flu until the week of November 17, 2024 – much earlier than the rest of the country. Louisiana and New Jersey were experiencing a moderate spread of influenza at the time, CDC data show.

Until mid-December, much of the United States-Lentally south, southwest and Pacific northwest, high or very high levels of influenza activity.

At the end of January, much of the country has a very high or high flu activity, according to CDC. The state had to be ranked at Level 11, 12 or 13 in order to believe that it has a very high flu activity.

The following conditions were ranked at levels 11 and 12 in the second until the last week of January:

Level 12 – very high

  • Alabama
  • Georgia
  • Michigan
  • Mississippi
  • Nebraska
  • New Mexico
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Texas
  • Washington, County Colombia

  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Florida
  • Kansas
  • Minnesota
  • New York State
  • Oklahoma

Several other countries have been ranked as high and moderate flu this week in January.

Montana, West Virginia and Alaska seem to have the most minimal flu while Wyoming and Hawaii were low.
