Flowers worth Rs. 371 million is likely to be traded this Tihar – Rising Nepal

According to Floriculture Association Nepal (FAN), compared to last year’s consumption, this year’s marigold demand is expected to grow by 14.29 percent.

About 4 million garlands of marigold flowers are estimated to be consumed during this year’s Tihar. A total of 4,75,000 amaranth (Makhamali) flower garlands, 20,000 Godavari and 30,000 mixed garlands are expected to be consumed this Tihar.

This figure is only for flowers grown commercially. Agriculture for household needs in the village is not counted.

It is estimated that 4.5 million garlands of Rs. 371 million of the cost of the flowers will be spent, FAN said.

Last year, the consumption of flower garlands was about 3.5 million. Fan predicts that local production is plentiful, so only a few numbers of flower garlands need to be imported to meet demand.

But due to the high import of about 6 million garlands of imported flowers, a large amount of local production could not enter the market, said Min Bahadur Tamang, former president of FAN.

This year, due to last year’s volatile market conditions as well as heavy rainfall on October 27 and 28, marigold cultivation was damaged a lot, resulting in reduced domestic production and supply, he said.

It grows commercial flowers in most parts of seven provinces. Domestic production corresponds to 100 percent in rural areas.

This year, 62.5% of Nepal’s flower demand is expected to be met by domestic production, with the remaining 37.50% flowers to be imported, according to FAN.

Marigold flowers are grown commercially in different areas of all seven provinces. Marigold flowers are mainly produced in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Chitwan, Dhading, Kavre, Makwanpur, Ramechhap, Jhapa, Ilam, Dhankuta, Sunsari, Morang, Dhanusha, Sarlahi, Saptari, Siraha, Rupandehi, Kaski, Syangja, Banke, Palpa , Tanahu, Dang, Kailali, etc.

Makhamali flower is grown commercially at Ichangunarayan in Kathmandu, Gundu in Bhaktapur, Godavari Badikhel in Lalitpur, Kailali, Palpa, Dhading and Ilam.

Florist Association of Nepal (FAN) is organizing the 17th Chrysanthemum Flower Competition Exhibition at Jawalakhel Playground from October 24.

The four-day exhibition is being organized targeting Tihar, the festival of flowers and light, according to FAN.

The exhibition will start from October 24 and will continue until October 27.
