Lubbock, TX – A flash flood warning remains active in Lubbock, TX today, with officials urging residents to use caution on the roads. The National Weather Service reports that up to 2.3 inches of rain has already fallen in the area, with more heavy rain expected throughout the day. Conditions are set to affect major routes, including local roads near Texas Tech University and areas around Lubbock International Airport. Drivers should avoid any low-lying roads, underpasses and intersections prone to waterlogging.

According to the National Weather Service, radar data showed thunderstorms producing moderate to heavy rainfall over southeast Hockley, Lubbock, northwest Linn and northeast Terry counties. Officials are warning drivers to “turn around, don’t drown” when they encounter flooded streets, as even a few inches of water can lead to dangerous conditions.

Forecast models show Lubbock could see up to 1 inch of additional rainfall later today. Areas around Wolfforth, Shallowater and New Deal are particularly at risk of flash flooding in areas of poor drainage where roads can become impassable. To minimize risks, residents are encouraged to avoid travel whenever possible, especially near the Reese Center and Slide.

In addition to today’s weather, rain is likely to continue into early next week. The current five-day forecast shows rain tapering off by Tuesday, but isolated thunderstorms could develop again by midweek. Residents should monitor local news and weather updates as conditions can change quickly, impacting local infrastructure and road safety.
