Dozens of firefighters tackled a large blaze at a derelict Indian restaurant in the village of Durham early this morning.
Emergency services were alerted to the fire at the former Mumbai restaurant in Haswell Plough, east Durham, just before 3am.
Three fire trucks and an aerial platform arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire. The extent of the damage is unknown at this stage.
A spokesman for Durham and Darlington County Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called to a fire at a derelict Indian restaurant in Haswell Plow at 2.50am on Saturday (October 26).
“We sent two units from Peterlee. one unit from Wheatley Hill and one unit from Durham.’
The premises, which sits prominently in the village, was formerly the Plow pub before it closed in 2012.

It later opened its doors in the Mumbai restaurant, which remains open until the Covid lockdown. It reopened after a lockdown, but it wasn’t long before it was closed permanently.
The premises have reportedly been vandalized since then.
