Fire extinguisher training outputs KCBD news in the cold – FOX 34

Lubbock, Texas (KCBD) – We know that fire extinguishers are everywhere, in commercial buildings, retail and apartments. But would you know how to use it in an emergency? And do we all have one at home?

At KCBD, we learned today that there are 22 fire extinguishers around the station. The small red pipes on the wall are hardly noticeable until we need one.

While some employees noticed them inside today, a group of us voluntarily got involved for training outside in the cold.

The Lubbock Fire Entinguisher Service offers this free training, so if necessary, you will feel comfortable pulling the pin that unlocks the mechanism and allows you to shoot the fire extinguisher.

This is something that many of us have a chance to practice today. Louis Vasquez runs the training program.

He says, “If one is fighting a fire, someone else should be in the process of a second fire extinguisher, only if they may take two or three fire extinguishers. But if it takes more than that, it’s time to get out because the fire will double in size every three minutes or so. Also, you want to know where all your exits are. “

Vasquez says there is a technique that comes with the use of a fire extinguisher. He says the purpose of the base of the fire, not the smoke. Squeeze the handle slowly and use the hose to focus on the side.

Portable fire extinguishers are designed to extinguish small fires. If it is a big flame and is distributed or filled with smoke, it is better to leave the area and call 911.

Also, because of safety, he says that there must be at least one fire extinguisher in every home. I have three who were in my house when we bought it. So, I brought one to the training to see if it was still working.

It turns out that every fire extinguisher should be checked regularly because they do not last forever.

Vasquez says, “Look at this gauge, Karin. Shows (this) needles in the green. So that means there is pressure in this thing. This gauge should be green. “

ABC fire extinguishes are easy, economically efficient and they lay any kind of fire. He says this is different from fire extinguishers of CO2 fire extinguishers that cannot be used in electric fire.

But the advantage of CO2 is that they do not leave a remnant like the big white patch of things we left in the KCBD parking lot.
