Fine after ‘hot spot’ speed camera on A1(M) catches County Durham driver going 70mph – The Northern Echo

Robert Powton, 58, of Durham Road, Spennymoor, was fined after being found guilty of speeding on the A1(M) between junctions 61 and 62 in County Durham earlier this year.

An A1(M) speed camera caught a Durham driver going over 70mph:

The incident on March 2, 2024. features a driver’s Audi car recording speeds above the 70mph limit with piloted equipment.

Pouton did not attend the hearing held on October 17 at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court.

The court proceeded in his absence, finding him guilty and fined him £100.

He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £40.

His driving record will be upheld with three penalty points, although no disqualification has been imposed.

A collection order has been issued with the balance of £140 to be paid by November 14th.

This court charge comes after it was announced that the speed camera that caught Pouton had caught nearly 6,000 drivers in the last year and was one of the UK’s 20 hottest spots for speeding drivers .

The speed camera at junction 61 in Bowburn on the A-road came 19th on the list, which was compiled following an FOI by Legal Expert, a personal injury, compensation and accident lawyer.

Figures provided by FOI show that 5,906 drivers were caught by County Durham’s A1(M) speed camera between April 5, 2023. and April 5, 2024, which equates to 16 speeding drivers per day.

Through FOI, Legal Expert contacted 43 police services in England and Wales, and only 23 responded.

Elsewhere on the list, the A38 in Nottinghamshire came top with 17,490 drivers caught, while the M25 in Surrey was second and the A217 in Reigate third.

County Durham’s speed camera was the only one in the North East to feature in the top 20 – with Legal Expert saying 5.2 million speeding tickets were issued in the last 12 months.
