Sean Monahan (C – CBJ) | 41.0% Enrolled
Hopefully we don’t buy Sean Monahan too much and are left holding the bag if he goes down in the coming weeks. Even if his scoring output dips a bit, the center is still on the ice for the most important moments. He centers the top line as well as gets time on the main power.
Overall this year, Monahan has accumulated 11 points (51st), which have come thanks to six goals (22nd) and five assists (110th). He is also second on Columbus’ list in SOG shots on goal with 36 (3.3 per game). I think Monahan is an excellent mid-term option as long as this Blue Jackets offense, which is averaging 3.5 goals per game (11th), keeps the goals coming.
Connor McMichael (C – WSH) | 25.4% on the list
Another surprising start to the year is the Washington Capitals, who boast the third-best offense in the league (4.4 goals per game). Connor McMichael seems to have lit the lamp at will this year, where he recorded seven goals (11th) and five assists (110th). Heading into the new week, McMichael has scored in three straight games and four of his last five contests.
The natural center fielder settles in on Washington’s second line, playing alongside Pierre-Luc Dubois and Tom Wilson. He is also on the top power play unit, but has yet to do any damage on the man advantage unit. McMichael leads the team in SOG with 31 (3.1 per game). If you’re looking for depth at forward, you can’t go wrong with McMichael. In his next nine games, four of his opponents ranked 28th or worse in GAA (3.50 GAA or worse).
Alex Vlasic (D – CHI) | 6.7% Enrolled
Alex Vlasic is a rising defenseman in the NHL. He just signed a six-year, $27.6 million contract extension with the Blackhawks in April. The 23-year-old doesn’t have much offensive production, but has recorded six assists (69) in 12 games this year. However, four of those points have come in the last six games, so he can continue to develop offensively.
I mostly like this pickup because of its shot blocking ability. The Blackhawks took home the eighth-highest SOG (360) this year, and I don’t expect that to change as they are a young, run-and-shoot team. This allowed Vlasic to accumulate 31 blocked shots to start the year. This is the eighth most in the NHL.
Jonathan Quick (G – NYR) | 12.2% on the list
Last but certainly not least, I think Jonathan Quick might be worth adding as a goalkeeper. Unfortunately, the only thing holding back the veteran netminder is Igor Shesterkin handling most of the workload between the pipes. With that said, Quick has been fantastic when given opportunities as he is 2-0-0 with a 1.51 GAA and .953 SV%.
You can’t count on Quick as an everyday goaltender as he only plays 20% of the games. However, if you have room to hide a goalie or need a one-time pick, Quick is the guy. He often receives weak competition, as Shesterkin usually deals with larger opponents. That should help keep Quick’s numbers down.
