One in five Wilmington residents lives in poverty and is much more struggling to afford a home.

The city faces a deepening housing crisis with 500 free properties, exacerbated by the lack of coordination between residential resources and development plans.

To cope with these challenges, State Senator Elizabeth “Tizzy” Lockman convenes a housing meeting on Monday. The closed -door meeting will unite local civic leaders, housing experts and representatives of state agencies to discuss a unified strategy to deal with the city’s housing crisis.

The main issues on the agenda include the conversion of free properties into homes at affordable prices, expanding transitional housing programs and creating new paths to home ownership.

The leading discussion will be four housing experts:

  • Matthew Heckles, a newly appointed Director of the State Housing Authority in Delaware and a former HUD regional administrator
  • Morgan B. Cephas, Pennsylvania State Representative known for Innovative Housing Initiatives
  • Alex Horovitz, a housing policy researcher at Pew Charitious Trusts
  • Sean O’Neal, a MEAD and Hunt City Planning Specialist

While the summit on Monday is limited to civil servants and residential stakeholders, Senator Lockman emphasized that this was only the first step. A second event open to the public will be held later this year.
