An employee at the Walmart in Monkey Junction was shot and killed Saturday, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 6 p.m., several Walmart employees tried to stop a man from shoplifting at Walmart – located at 5135 Carolina Beach Road, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
A struggle ensued and “the suspect brandished a firearm and fired one shot, striking a Walmart employee,” the release said.
The victim died at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
The suspect fled but was confronted by a sheriff’s deputy in the parking lot and taken into custody, the sheriff’s office said.
As of late Saturday night, the identities of the victim and the suspect had not been released. The sheriff’s office also has not released the charges against the suspect.
