Economic impacts of steel tariffs on Wilmington’s business – Wect

Wilmington, NC (WECT) – President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff for the entire import of steel and aluminum in the United States. Local construction companies say the tariff can lead to higher costs.

The steel and aluminum tariff will come into force in March. President Trump says the tariff will help bring money to steel companies based in the US.

Much of the steel used in the US is imported from other countries, including Canada, Mexico and South Korea.

“Since it was Canada this time, it definitely made us understand that our prices would be hit harder than the last round,” said Adam Cardin, who is the leader of the Timeless Construction business development project.

In 2018, a steel tariff coming from China was placed. Kadin says his business has not seen much impact on the 2018 tariff, but the new tariff reaches a closer home as it uses a good part of Canada steel.

Currently, harmless construction has projects that are happening in the Counts of New Hanover and Pennder. The company works on park and entertainment projects, entertainment spaces and helps to renovate the Athletic Stadium at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

“We use steel for every construction project,” Cardin said. He added that, depending on what steel suppliers do, the price of buildings can be increased by 10% by the new tariff.

Cardine noted that the new tariff would take time to get used to. “I would like to see Canada’s tariff to be a little more comfortable for the user,” he added.

In general, Cardine says he supports the purchase of steel from US companies. He also hopes he will not have to raise prices too much for new buildings in the region.

“It is never nice to have to increase the price after you have already given a budget for a project. This puts us in a difficult place if we predict a project in the near future. “
