Drainage upgrades are coming to Green Springs Hwy – WBRC

Drainage upgrades are coming to Green Springs Hwy – WBRC

JEFFERSON CO., Ala. (WBRC) – Homewood and Birmingham are working together on a drainage ditch improvement project along Green Springs Highway.

“So we’re concerned about Green Springs Highway and its structural integrity and so we would … hopefully this project that we’re about to do will slow the erosion from undermining Green Springs Highway,” said Homewood City Engineer Cale Smith.

The ditch is right next to 76 Green Springs Hwy.

Although Homewood and Birmingham are each contributing $30,000 to the project, Homewood will manage the upgrades.

Smith says the problem was identified about a year ago and they have been working with Birmingham for about six months now.

James Fowler, director of Birmingham’s transport department, says there are three main aims.

“So one is to install a curb along the edge of the roadway there,” he explained. “There is no curb there today. The second is to clean the ends of the channel and place new stone or tear along those ends to stabilize it. Then three, at one particular location along the canal there’s actually an exposed utility line that’s been exposed because of all the erosion, so with this project we’re actually going to cover that backup.

Smith says the project should only take between two and four weeks. He hopes to start and finish in December.
