MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources along with the help of Capital City Muskies Inc. released Muskies on the Olin Park boat Thursday.
This annual event has been held for the past four decades. On Thursday, they released the big lake speckled fish, which is a type of muskie, for the first time.
They were born in the spring and raised at the Wild Rose DNR Hatchery by volunteers. They were raised until they were big enough to be released.
Officials said muskies are considered an Apex predator, giving them a famous nickname for fishermen.
“They have the nickname of the 10,000-cast fish,” said Greg Voss, Capitol City Muskies Inc. stocking chair. “So you have to be dedicated and do a lot of travel and pleasure.”
Officials said the males released Thursday won’t be ready for fishing for two or three years.
Over 2,700 muskies will be released into Madison area lakes.
