It wasn’t too long ago that Lubbock had two Denny’s locations.
Change is happening
When I was a kid there was a restaurant we liked to have breakfast at called Sambos. Sambos was probably the most racist restaurant concept in history and I’ll just leave it at that. The point is that times change, tastes change and restaurants must change with the times. There is also the fact that there is increased competition and it can be very difficult to keep a restaurant chain afloat.
The chain is decreasing
Denny’s announced it is closing 150 stores by 2025. While 150 is a significant number, the chain has 1,586 stores as of September of this year. I’m not 100% sure what’s going on with their business model, but having 1400+ locations sounds like they’re still doing well.
Here in Lubbock
It wasn’t until May of this year that we noticed that the Denny’s on Avenue Q had closed. It seemed odd because all the new student housing was nearby and that the restaurant was in relatively good shape (you can see pictures right here). True, it was located in one of Lubbock’s more modest areas, but this area showed many signs of improvement.
What remains
That leaves us with one Denny’s location at 4718 Slide Road. Could it be in danger of closing? It’s really hard to speculate. Denny’s has always been a comfort restaurant, not necessarily something you crave. On a side note, they currently have an “Afterlife” menu inspired by Beetlejuice that looks very tasty. The only thing I can say is that I have never, ever had a bad meal at Denny’s, whether it was 3 in the morning or 3 in the afternoon. Let’s cross our fingers and hope they got stronger by one place.
