Demolition signal: Main changes in traffic coming to 74th Street – ETSN.FM

Hey, Lyubok! If you have ever driven along the 74th street and Genoa Avenue, you may have seen the uplifting structure that has been part of the Lubbock silhouette for years. Well, come on Monday, February 10th, Trifecta Services Company downloads it and if you are traveling through this area, you may want to plan in advance!

What happens?

The destruction begins on Monday, and with it comes the deviations of traffic and possible delays. City authorities encourage drivers to avoid the area if possible, or at least use extreme attention when passing. It is expected that the whole project will take until June 2025, so fasten for a few months redirect.

What actually does the water tower?

Okay, so we see water towers everywhere, but have you ever wondered what they really do? No, they are not just big, abandoned UFO landing pads.

Water towers store and press water to ensure that we have a stable supply in our homes and business. Here’s how it works:

  1. The water is pumped into the tower of underground sources, such as wells or tanks.
  2. The tower stores the water, usually several hundred thousand gallons at a time.
  3. Gravity creates water pressure, which allows water to flow down through pipes to homes, businesses and fire hydrants.
  4. It maintains pressure consistent so that when you turn on the sink or shower, the water flows smoothly instead of tingling like a sad garden hose.

Because water towers use gravity to create pressure, they do not rely on electricity to function – so that even during power cuts, they help to maintain running water. Genius!

Why does this go down?

Although this particular tower has been doing its job for years, aging infrastructure, changing the needs of water and new technology means that it is time to retire. The city is likely to replace it with a more modern system that meets the current requirements.

So, while you don’t think twice about the water towers, they play a huge role to make sure we can take showers, water our lawns and fight fires. And if you are in the 74th and Genoa, just remember – Monday marks the beginning of the end for this landmark on Lubbock!

Here’s a great educational video with more about how the water tower actually works:
