December deadline for new retirement savings program – WCAX

MONTPELIER, Va. (WCAX) – Almost a hundred thousand Vermonters are working without a retirement savings plan, the state treasurer’s office has a new program to fix that, and sign-up is just a month away.

They call it Vermont Saves. From December 1, all companies with more than five employees will have to have pension savings. If they don’t already have one, companies can enroll in the program from December 1. According to Treasurer Mike Pieciak, it costs employers nothing, very little to the state and will reach Vermont’s most vulnerable.

“In those 88,000 are generally younger workers.” Typically, these are lower-educated, accomplished, lower-income workers, overrepresented relative to Bipoc members, overrepresented relative to women relative to men. So that’s exactly the population we want to help and empower,” said Vermont Treasurer Mike Pieciak.

The last day to apply for the program is February 28. Enforcement mechanisms, including fines, will then be issued.
