Dear Wisconsin Sheriffs, please start listing ICE listing in your daily lists with prison – Wisconsin right now

Dear Wisconsin Sheriffs, please start listing ICE listing in your daily lists with prison – Wisconsin right now

This is an opinion.

There are two immediate things that the law enforcement of Wisconsin and prosecutors can do to help in a more knowledge of the public about illegal immigration:

    1. Wisconsin’s sheriffs could begin to include icy detainees in their daily lists with public prisons. Some county sheriffs are already doing this in Wisconsin (and you will be surprised which ones), but most do not. It would be ideal if they also note if they refuse ice retention.
    2. Tell the public if a suspect is an illegal immigrant in writing a press release or a criminal appeal for arrest or a crime -related charge.

Prairie du Chien Police and Fond du Lac County Da Eric Toney have led the road. Prairie du chien police have revealed that a sexual assault suspected is a member of the Venezuewell gang, which caused Trump’s rally and a national reflection of the news at the angle.

Tony has released an illegal public immigration status.

This caused the titles like the one of Fox 11 News, “A person in a country illegally convicted of an attack with a knife against his wife during a dispute in the du Lac.” The angle would probably be ignored or missed without Tony, including in a press message.

Most agencies don’t do this. In fact, it is very difficult for the media to understand which prisoners are illegal immigrants otherwise.

Requires requests for open records or anonymous sources. Most reporters will not look for it. Prairie du chien and toney have proven that the media will report on immigration and crime if they make them easier.

Taking the above actions would help to educate the public and provoke more balanced news coverage. In addition, it is more transparent to the victims who have the right to know whether a person who sacrifices them or a loved one has been legal in this country or not.

Let’s talk about prison lists for a second. This should be easy for sheriffs associated with minimal resource costs. In fact, the disclosure can be modeled on the new efforts to transpare a conditional release committee, although this is a must.

State legislation now requires the Conditional Exemption Commission to inform the public of its website, for which prisoners are considered conditional release (and put into conditional release). Statistical data disclosure is also required. See the website.

In the past, it was extremely difficult for news media and the public – but the most important thing for the victims – to learn who was coming for conditional release or being released in Wisconsin. In fact, we have won a great award for journalism for our series, documenting systemic failure from the state to notify the families of the victims of passwords. This has led to a new legislation requiring this level of transparency.

In contrast, the prisoners are illegal immigrants are still covered with a secret. In most counties, a request for open records would be required to learn the information – as was the case of conditional release in Wisconsin. And this is a very time -consuming process. Some counties have ignored our requests. Others are quickly complying with.

Here are some examples of prisoners who are currently in prisons that reveal that they are holding ice/immigration on their lists with a Wisconsin prison. But, again, it’s rare. You can see how valuable this information would be to know and how some (but not most) shuts it reveal it. It would also be useful if prisons reveal themselves when they reject ice retention, because in some jurisdictions it happens a lot.

We were able to write a number of stories on the subject because of the counties that include the information on the prison lists, but the vast majority do not. Check out these stories here.
