The Caldwell Dairy Processing Plant will pay $ 318,000 to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to dispose of excessive E. coli in the Boise River. The facility agreed to pay the fine, which was issued in September, earlier this month.

The crimes involving the disposal of evaporated condensation of whey (cow) and polluted rainwater was held between September 2018 and April 2022, according to a draft agreement between the parties.

This period covers the time when the facility was damaged and temporarily closed due to a fire in 2021. In April 2022 Pollutants (NPDES) permission that allows the boundaries at which pollutants can be discarded.

Sometimes E. coli levels of ejection were almost six times greater than the authorized amount, which is 406-forming colonies units (CFU) per 100 ml bacteria. EPA inspectors made measurements in three cases in the years after the crimes.

The EPA also cites the plant for neglecting “routine inspections of the facilities during the release of rainwater” and for not “adequate control measures” when it comes to minimizing the disposal of pollutants in the river.

Darigold agreed to pay the amount without recognizing or refusing guilt, and refused to comment when asked.
