Reno, Nev. (Kolo) – The MT Rose Highway is closed from around 3:00 pm on Thursday, as winter storms brought 3 to 4 feet of snow in the areas in the last few days.
The road is closed by Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe to the relaxation area of the Incline lake.
Meg Ragonese, an employee of public information on the Ministry of Transport in Nevada (NDOT) says the elevation plays a role in dangerous conditions.
“One thing that is interesting about the highway of the Rose Mountain is that it is actually the highest passage of Sierra to hold open all year long. Some of the other meetings at the Sierra summit, they close for the winter season, “says Ragonese.
Ndot works to help clear snow from insidious areas with shock waves that break down snow and mitigate the risk of avalanches on the road.
“What we can do is stop traffic safely on both sides of the highway, manually detonate an explosion,” Ragonese says. “It helps to loosen the snow. Often this snow is driven or accumulated in a series of storms and these layers have the potential to be truly unstable. And they are experts in the fact that it is time to explode a human -created avalanche with safe highway traffic. “
After the impacts are sent, the crews work with snowflakes and fans to remove the snow that has fallen on the roads.
Ndot did not say when the roads would open again.
