Members of the CUI swim teams competed in the 2nd Annual MPFS Open Water Championships on Saturday at the Long Beach Marine Stadium. Facing off against D1, D2 and D3 competition, the Golden Eagles posted some solid results in the 2,000 meter relay event.
The men’s 4×500 m relay Mitchell Cullen, Joey Molettieri, Tom McCabe and Hunter May reached the podium, finishing third behind teams from CBU and GCU. Mitch put the Eagles in the top-3 with a strong 5:55 split to take the lead, and the trio of Joey, Tom and Hunter each finished with sub-6:30 splits.
The men’s B team of Andrew Saladin, Garin Hatfield, Aidan Keane and Lannis Webb rallied to tie for 5th in the event.
The CUI women swam well in a deeper field of D1 squads. Relay A on Morgan Warren (6:36), Naomi Nakaya (6:54), Elena Argabright (6:34) and Peyton Doak (6:45) stayed in the middle of the main pack throughout the race and grabbed 7th place. Relay B on Alia Treadwell, Bree Anderson, Makayla Novak and Faith Urquhart surged up with a strong leg from Novak to finish 12th and C relay team of CUI freshman sprinters Cassidy HarrisBrinkley Hallgren, Julia Smirnovand Brooke McCoy swam to a steady 15th place.
The full lineup is back in action next Saturday when it travels to Pomona Pitzer for a 10:30 a.m. doubleheader against the SageHens.
