A Cuban man was taken into custody by Hialeah police Sunday, facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly shot his ex-wife multiple times at her Kendall residence following an argument, authorities said. The suspect, identified as Pedro NunesThe 47-year-old admitted to arguing with his ex-partner and shooting her at least four times in the hallway of the house. According to the arrest report cited by El Nuevo Herald, the woman’s body fell toward the door, causing it to open and she collapsed inside.
After the shooting, Nunes fled the scene and called her father to admit he shot her, mistakenly believing she was dead, as described in a statement released Monday by Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD). Nunes and his victim, whose identity has not been released, share a 10-year-old child.
Details of the incident and emergency response
The incident occurred early Sunday morning at a residence located in the 6200 block of Southwest 109th Avenue. Officers arrived shortly after 3:30 a.m. to find the woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Her injuries, located on the torso, limbs and buttocks, are life-threatening. Miami-Dade EMS rushed her away HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.
While in and out of consciousness, the victim was able to inform authorities that her ex-husband was the shooter, according to the report. She underwent surgery on Sunday and remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition, with another surgery scheduled for Monday.
Witness and arrest
A tenant of the home alerted authorities after arriving home around 3:34 a.m. to find the front door open. After opening the door to his rented office, he noticed a significant amount of blood on the floor, prompting him to call 911 from the street.
While Miami-Dade officials were on scene, Hialeah Police Department reported that the suspect surrendered to their jurisdiction and was taken into custody. Nunes also surrendered the firearm used in the shooting. He was subsequently transferred to the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Domestic Violence Unit, which is currently handling the investigation.
Nunes was taken to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade, facing a charge of attempted murder with a firearm. He was due in court on Monday.
