Las Vegas, Nev. (FOX5) – Elizabeth arrived at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service, hoping that the appointment she scheduled eight months ago will bring her closer to stability in the United States.
But when she left the building, her optimism was gone.
The asylum seeker from Cuba learned that her appointment was deferred, another delay in a process that she believes is filled with uncertainty. She told Ice employees told her that the deferral was tied to the new administration.
“I made the meeting on May 10, but when I got here, they said that since there was a new administration, my appointment was deferred,” says Elizabeth in Spanish.
Elizabeth, who escaped Cuba’s repression and dictatorship last year, said she originally entered the United States, legally using the CBP One app at the border. The app that allowed migrants to plan meetings in official ports for entry was dismantled earlier this month as part of the broader immigration repair.
“There are several people who I know personally who have stuck to the border precisely because their appointments have been canceled, they have been very bad,” she said.
Some, such as Jaime Gonzalez, an immigrant from El Salvador, believe that these policies are needed to maintain justice in the immigration system.
“I did it legally because my parents did it,” said Haime. “They made all the documentation and I became a citizen.”
Jaime says he understands the struggles that immigrants face, but he believes that others should follow legal paths to the United States, he has also expressed powerlessness from people who feels to benefit from state aid.
“They just take advantage. I take care of my child, take him to school and see all the parents who do not work, “said Haime. “They are just waiting for the system to support them.”
The Fox5 addressed ICE to comment on whether the appointments were being reflected due to the policies of the new administration, but they have not yet received an answer.
