Crime Stoppers credits public for bringing Birmingham shooting suspect into courtroom – WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Alabama Metro Crime Stoppers say the public was a key component in getting a suspect in the Birmingham mass shooting into court.

Damien McDaniel, who appeared in Court on Wednesdayis a defendant in both Five points south and Trendsetters Lounge attacks.

“In both the fashionistas and Hush cases, the same name was popping up very quickly in both,” said Crime Stoppers executive director Bob Copus. “They were both obviously valuable to law enforcement. Of course, you get your day in court and we’ll let it all play out. “

McDaniel is charged with 37 felony counts from five separate shootings.

He is currently accused of killing 11 people and shooting 29.

Crime Stoppers stressed that anonymous community tips have the potential to bring justice to families.

“I talked to so many families,” Kopus shared. “They’re just devastated that no one has come forward to say anything.”

However, across the five southern mass shootings, the community submitted about 135 tips, six of which resulted in a cash reward.

The chief executive said no council was too small and the public should speak up if they ever knew anything.

“Nobody knows your community better than you do,” Kopus said.

McDaniel pleaded not guilty to two counts of capital murder of two or more persons, capital murder-slavery, capital murder and murder.

He also renounced the contract for the remaining 32 items.
