Ebube scored a career-high 22 points
SAN JOSE, CA (January 25, 2025) – The Wyoming Cowboys lost a physical contest on the road at San Jose State, 67-58, on Saturday night at the Provident Credit Union Events Center. Wyoming was held to 33 percent from the field and 19 percent from behind the arc.
“It’s pretty simple, you can’t have everybody have their worst shooting night on the same night,” UW head coach Sundance Weeks said. “We knew they were a good one-on-one defensive team and our guards weren’t able to get into the paint from guys either. You have to get into a rhythm early. Tough players play and tough players win.”
Wyoming was held to a season-low 19 percent from behind the arc as Wyoming led the conference in three-point shooting early in the game. San Jose State shot 44.2 percent from the field and made six 3-pointers on the night at a 42.9 percent clip. The Spartans held a 43-41 advantage on the glass.
The Pokes were led by Scottie Ebube with a career-high 22 points for his second game this season in double figures. He was 11 of 14 from the field with four dunks. Guard Obi Agbim had seven points for his first game this season under double figures, but added six assists. Oleg Kozhenets and Dontay Allen each added six points.
Turnovers stymied the Cowboy offense early, with the Spartans taking a 5-2 lead, but buckets from Agbim and Ebube made it 6-5 for the Pokes with 12 minutes left in the half. Wyoming held the Spartans scoreless for more than a minute, but SJSU hit back-to-back three-pointers to take an 11-6 lead midway through the half.
SJSU extended its lead to 13-8, but Kojenets and Agbim made it a 13-12 game. Ebube added a dunk and layup to make it 16-15 for the Pokes with five minutes left in the half, but a 6-0 run made it 21-16.
Allen added a 3-pointer, but Wyoming didn’t score in the final three minutes as the Spartans took a 23-19 halftime lead. The Pokes shot 29.6 percent in the half and were held to one three-point conversion.
The Pokes would push the Spartan lead to one point multiple times while Ebube reached double figures. A 7-2 run by the Spartans made it 34-28 with 16 minutes left in the contest. Agbim added a 3-pointer, but a 7-0 run gave the Spartans a 41-31 lead with 13 minutes left.
Wyoming went scoreless for more than two minutes as SJSU built an 11-point lead midway through the second frame. Wyoming went five minutes without a field goal as the Spartans extended their lead to 12 points at 50-38 with less than eight minutes left.
The Spartans would continue to frustrate the Pokes on the defensive end of the floor and led by as many as 14 points with three minutes to go. San Jose State took the race, hhh-hhh
The Spartans were led by Latrell Davis with 22 points. He was 8 of 11 from the field and knocked down three 3-pointers in the contest.
Wyoming returns home Tuesday to host Fresno State at the Arena-Auditorium for a 6:30 p.m. start in a Mountain West Network contest.
