It comes after Helen Worth, who played Platt family matriarch Gail for 50 years, announced she will be leaving the ITV soap this year.
Wednesday’s episode saw Jesse spot Gail breathing unsteadily and clutching her hand as she searched for a bicycle pump before calling an ambulance to take her to hospital.
Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, Thomson, 55, explained what will happen next in tonight’s episode.
He said: “So what happens is I visit Gail in hospital and she’s after a cardiac arrest, so a second heart attack, and I’m allowed to say this, Gail offers me.
“I can’t say more because she’s heavily medicated, so I don’t know if her intentions are true.”
Thomson said Worth, 73, was “a joy to work with,” as were the other actors who play members of the Platt family.
He added: “She’s (an integral part of Coronation Street), the Platts are a pleasure to work with, fun people too.
“But they shoot everything out of sequence, one moment we’re laughing at Plath’s house, the next I’m running along with a stroller, you kind of manage the full range of emotions in a workday.
“It was a joy and it’s great because Helen has been in it for 50 years and you see pictures and you’re like, oh who was he? And what was he like? She has great stories, amazing.”
It comes after the storyline of Worth’s exit was thrown into limbo after Sean Wilson – who played her ex-husband Martin Platt – announced his departure from the soap for “personal reasons”.
The 59-year-old last appeared on the cobbles six years ago and was due to reappear on screen this month as part of Worth’s departure.
Asked about a potential new replacement storyline, an ITV spokesperson said: “Sean Wilson has withdrawn from filming for personal reasons.”
Speaking about replacing Wilson, Thomson said: “It’s been quiet, the year before was brilliant but this year I’ve gone, please, I need a job.
“I got a call and they went Corey are you coming back? And I went, yes.
“I wasn’t sure what the deal was, it was weird what the storyline was, anyway knowing now what the storyline is, it’s a Coronation Street story.”
At the time of Wilson’s departure, the broadcaster said it would not comment further on the situation, having previously said Worth would be leaving following a “major Platt family storyline”.
Coronation Street will return to ITV1 on October 27 at 8pm, with the next episode available to watch on ITVX.
