Two Lubbock-area high schools were evacuated after the campuses received bomb threats Monday afternoon, although officials said there was no danger to the schools and students were allowed to return to class safely.
Lubbock ISD’s Coronado High School and Frenship High School received bomb threats around 1 p.m. Monday, officials confirmed. Schools were evacuated and law enforcement is investigating the threats. Frenship ISD said the Ninth Grade Center was not involved in the threat.
Lubbock ISD issued an all-clear for Coronado around 2:50 p.m., and students returned to class. Frenship High allowed some students to leave early, but those who didn’t returned to school at 3:20 p.m. after law enforcement cleared the building.
Coronado High School Principal Chris Huber sent a series of messages to parents stating that while officials did not believe the threats posed a danger, police were sweeping the campus while students and staff remained on the football field.
“We appreciate your patience and cooperation during this time and are grateful to our local law enforcement agencies for their quick and thorough response,” Huber wrote.
Frenship ISD also said in a statement that officials do not believe the threats are credible, but the administration has taken precautions. Students were evacuated to Peoples Bank Stadium and allowed to leave for the day while police investigated.
“While there is no credible evidence to substantiate a threat to Frenship High School or (Coronado High School), we are taking these reports very seriously and remain in contact with our local law enforcement,” Frenship officials wrote. “We want to remind our students that there can be serious disciplinary and criminal consequences for intentionally spreading or making false threats.”
New Home ISD also reported threats to its secondary campus Monday morning.
Shortly after 7 a.m., the precinct issued a statement acknowledging “reports of potential threats of violence” but saying law enforcement found the threats unfounded. School officials said the district sent extra law enforcement officers off its campuses Monday as a precaution.
It was not immediately known if any of the threats were related. No other details were available as of press time Monday.
