The multimillioned funding for the transformation of a city center has been confirmed by the government, following what the local council called “12 months of uncertainty”.

13.5 million British pounds will pay for regeneration works in Kendall, Cambria, including renovation of the indoor market, making the WestMorland shopping center a new campus for a local college and connecting the city center to the Kent River.

WestMorland and Furness Council was temporarily awarded the equalization of funding in November 2023 by the then Conservative Administration.

But after the overall victory of Laburi’s election, council leader Jonathan Brooke said he had written to Deputy Minister Angela Rayner asking for clarity.

Called the heart of Kendall, the scheme is also designed to include upgrading Market Place and Kent Street.

“Turn ambitions into reality”

Local government said “millions of pounds worth state support for transformation projects to improve the center of Kendall have been confirmed after 12 months of uncertainty.”

Describing as “delighted”, Brooke said, “We can now move forward and make them happen.

“The delay was disappointing, but we never lost sight of the look behind the offer from the partners of the Kendall Town team.

“It’s great that we can now turn these ambitions to Kendall a reality.”

He said the award means that the Council can pursue its “original vision” for the indoor market.

The initial works, which were possible with 840,000 British pounds from the government’s prosperity fund, began in December and include wall repair around the perimeter, replacement of the roof, interior strip, electrical work and processing.

The site was to be closed for about four months, but Kendall’s heart heart will see a long closure of what the Council said that “additional improvements” aimed at reviving the site.

Sun panels will be installed on the roof, such as measures such as energy efficient LED lighting and a heat source, which should follow.

The authority said it invited expressions from traders and other businesses with information on its website.
