The press secretary Carolyn Levitt said that “the Government of Colombia agreed to all President Trump’s conditions, including the unlimited acceptance of all illegal foreigners from Colombia returned from the United States, including US military aircraft, without restriction or delay.”
Mrs. Leavitt said the tariff orders – which would impose 25% duties on all Colombian incoming goods and then raised to 50% in one week – would be “kept in reserve and not signed”.
She said Mr. Trump would maintain visa restrictions on Colombian employees and increased customs inspections of goods from the country “until the first Airplane with Colombian deported was successfully returned.”
Colombia President Gustavo Petro, who rejected two US military aircraft carrying migrants after accusing Mr Trump of not treating immigrants during deportation, re-published a statement from the White House of X.
“We have overcome the dead street with the United States government,” said Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo. “We will continue to accept Colombians who return as deported, guaranteeing decent conditions as citizens with rights.”
He said the country’s presidential aircraft was available to facilitate the return of migrants.
Colombia’s decision comes hours after Mr. Trump has threatened to order the rates, visa restrictions and other responding measures against Colombia after the government rejected two US military fields with migrants.
Mr Trump said measures are necessary as Mr. Petro’s decision “threatens” national security in the United States.
“These measures are only the beginning,” Mr Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
“We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations regarding the acceptance and return of the criminals they forced to enter the United States.”
Earlier on Sunday, Mr Petro said that his government would not accept flights carrying migrants deported from the United States until the Trump administration created a protocol that treated them with “dignity”.
Mr. Petro made the message in two X posts, one of which included a news video of migrants reported to have been deported to Brazil, walking on asphalt with arms and legs.
“The emigrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves,” said Mr. Petro.
“That is why I returned US military planes carrying Colombian migrants … In civilian planes, without being treated as criminals, we will accept our fellow citizens.”
Following Mr Trump’s statement, Mr. Petro announced in an X publication that he had ordered the “Foreign Trade Minister to raise the US import rates by 25%”.
Colombia has adopted 475 deportation fields from the United States from 2020 to 2024, fifth after Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and El Salvador, according to the Witness at the Border, an advocacy group that tracks flight data. He accepted 124 deportation fields in 2024.
Last year, Colombia and other countries began accepting US -funded deportation flights from Panama.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Mr. Petro has “canceled his permission” for flights when the plane was in the air.
In recent years, the Colombians have emerged as a major presence at the US border with Mexico, aided in part by the visa regime, which allows them to easily fly to Mexico and avoid transition through the insidious gap.
They are in fourth place with 127 604 arrests for illegal passing in a 12-month period to September, behind the Mexicans, Guatemalanis and Venezuelans.
Mexico did not impose visa restrictions on Colombians, like the Venezuela, the Ecuadorians and the Peruvians.
The Pet’s Government, a former left-wing partisan, later announced that the South American presidential aircraft had been provided to facilitate the return of migrants who had to arrive hours earlier with US military aircraft and guarantee them “Decent conditions”.
As part of a series of actions to implement US President Donald Trump’s election promises to deal with illegal immigration, his government uses the military of active service to support the border guard and to make deportations.
Two US Air Force C-17s carrying migrants moved from the United States landed early on Friday in Guatemala. On the same day, Honduras received two deportment flights carrying a total of 193 people.
In announcing what he called “emergency and decisive response,” Mr Trump explained that he had ordered “25% duties on all goods coming to the United States”, which will be increased to 50% in a week.
He said he also ordered a “ban on travel and immediate visa” by Colombian government officials, allies and supporters.
“All party members, family members and supporters of the Colombian government,” wrote Mr Trump, will be the subject of visa sanctions.
He did not say which country it was, nor did it give further details about visas and travel limitations.
Mr Trump added that all Colombians would face enhanced customs inspections.
