GILBERT, Ariz. — The Gilbert City Council will vote Wednesday on whether or not to raise the sales tax from 1.5 percent to 2 percent. That means 50 cents more for every $100 spent.
The council will also vote on whether or not to add a 2 percent tax to online purchases through Arizona vendors that make less than $100,000 in sales annually and whether to increase the bed tax levied on city hotels to 5 percent.
City leaders say recent cuts in the Legislature are part of the reason they’re targeting taxes.
There are various projects they hope the tax increase will cover, including additional parks and amenities for the city and expansion of several police and public safety buildings, including a crime victim advocacy center.
Wednesday’s meeting is at 6:30 pm at 50 E. Civic Center Drive. The public can weigh in before the council votes.
