LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Travel just got easier for those booking flights through the Clovis Regional Airport.
Federal, state and city officials broke ground today on the new 25,000-square-foot terminal that is changing the future of travel in the city.
Clovis Mayor Mike Morris believes this will be an amazing opportunity for area travelers.
“I think it connects our residents to the world in such a powerful way. In hours, you could be in Denver or Dallas-Fort Worth,” Morris said. “Maybe you’re staying there, maybe you’re hooking up and going somewhere else, but just having it so close, people might not understand, but where people live, where we live, you’re used to that hour and half-past two hour’s drive after landing.”
Clovis Airport Director Amanda Brungart says this project will help grow the economy in Clovis.
“It’s going to be a great economic development for the city and for the airport, we’re expecting ten to fifteen new positions not only for airport staff, but also the potential for car rental restaurants for other airlines to come in with an unknown amount of employees,” said Brungart. “So this has a huge economic development aspect and we can see huge growth for the airport and the city itself.”
She says the growth won’t stop there. The new terminal will also broaden the horizons of the community.
“I can see it coming in leaps and bounds,” Brungart said. “We would love to see some cargo units come here and additional commercial airlines and I believe we have so much space and availability with our many runways that we can just – the sky’s the limit.” We can have whatever we want here. I think this is a great opportunity for Clovis and the surrounding areas, as well as the state of New Mexico.”
Morris says city leaders are always looking for ways to invest in the city and help make the community the best it can be.
“The Clovis team is doing something right; we’re growing, we’re investing in our infrastructure, we’re investing in quality of life, and you know, this airport project really does a lot in terms of improving quality of life,” Morris said. “You know, really making the world smaller for people because it’s very easy to fly in and out of Clovis.”
Construction of the terminal is scheduled to be completed in 18 months.
