City of Birmingham to Improve Cyber Security – WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The City of Birmingham is improving its cybersecurity after a cyber attack earlier this year compromised several systems.

City councilors passed a resolution Tuesday morning to accept a state and local grant to determine the city’s cybersecurity readiness level, identify areas for improvement and obtain resources to strengthen the city’s systems.

The funding request is close to $2 million with a 20% match from the city.

City Councilor Valerie Abbott says you can never have too much protection against these cybercriminals.

“Look at your computer at home,” she said. “You know, you’re always worried that someone’s going to walk into it. You won’t know they’re there. Well, someone got into ours and we know they were there, but how do you stop people from coming after you in the future? So that’s the whole point of it, and we’ll be working on it forever.”

Abbott continues, saying these cybercriminals are always looking for a way to break into systems and steal information, and the only way to keep them at bay is to keep upgrading security.
