BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) – A settlement has been reached between the city and the owner of the property that was the site of a mass shooting in July. At the time, the property was being leased to a tenant who was using the space as an event center.
ABC 33/40 revealed in the days after the shooting, which killed four people and injured ten others, that the business was not licensed to operate in that capacity. The city then filed a lawsuit that resulted in the site being closed until a settlement was reached in court.
The agreement was reached on October 11.
According to a city spokesperson, via information from the city attorney’s office, the terms of the settlement are as follows:
- The property can no longer be rented out as an event venue
- Efforts should be made to improve capital
- The tenant was given the opportunity to remove belongings from the property
We’ve reached out asking specifically what these capital improvement efforts are and await a response.
