Chris Davies backed Lyndon Dykes to take a goal for Birmingham City after the striker failed to clear his duck against Mansfield.

Scotland international Dykes missed a huge chance from the six-yard box at Field Mill shortly after Lee Gregory had drawn Mansfield level. Dykes has now failed to score in his first nine games for the Blues, although only three of those outings have been starts.

Davies is confident Dykes, who was favored from the start ahead of goalscorer Alfie May against Mansfield, will soon start finding the net.

“He contributed very well to the first goal,” commented Davies. “He’s a threat and a handful, anyone can see that.

“Like all strikers, they feed off goals and he wants to score that goal. Unfortunately, there are goals in him, absolutely, and I’m sure they will come.”

May was introduced in place of Jay Stansfield just before the hour mark. Davis says Stansfield’s withdrawal was premeditated and not some new injury problem.

The Blues boss said: “It was more a case of Jay not having a lot of game time or training in the last two or three weeks, I thought he did really well physically to get the time he did so it was a purely planned replacement.”
