What is a black box?
The fatal clash between the American Airlines flight and an army helicopter emphasizes the importance of flights called black boxes.
- Summer, a smoky tunnel machine, has completed its work on Bay Bay Bay-Tunnel’s new parallel tunnel of Thimble Shoal.
- The machine removed 500,000 cubic yards soil and installed almost 10,000 concrete segments.

After starting its mining venture back in February 2023, more than 6,300 feet under the Thimble Shoal channel, Chessie, has already completed its epic trip to the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel Bridge.

Chesi officially finished her trip, successfully coming out of the host pit on two islands on Wednesday. Chessi reached her final destination on Monday night. The extraction was then stopped to allow the joint venture Chesapeake Tunnel, the design artist for this project, to remove the temporary reinforcing supports and steel beams that are in place.
The yield resumed Wednesday morning while the chassis tunnels through the rest of the receiving wall.
Chessie is a mining horse for the Bay Bridge tunnel project
The completion of the extraction at Thimble Shoal Channel marks a significant moment for this project. Chessie, the tunnel boring machine, designed and built by Herrenknecht specifically for this project, has removed approximately 500,000 cubic yards soil and installed nearly 10,000 concrete segments, each weighing 10 tonnes as it began production in February 2023.
Now that her work is completed, shed will be out of operation and demobilized by the project for the parallel Thimble Shoal tunnel. The CTJV will then start constructing the roadway inside the tunnel, installing electrical/mechanical systems and building supporting buildings.
The new tunnel is the big goal for the project
Chessie’s work is a huge part of the construction of a new tunnel for the Bay Bay Bay Bay Tunnel Bridge.
The bridge and tunnel system crosses the lower Gulf of Chesapik, connecting the east coast of Virginia to the continental part of Virginia Beach. The parallel Thimble Shoal tunnel project involves the construction of a two-lane bored tunnel from the southernmost island of the project under the Thimble Shoal channel to the second island. He will paralle for an existing tunnel.
When it is completed, the new tunnel will allow one -way traffic. His two lanes will allow them to travel south, while the existing tunnel will handle two lanes of traffic directed north. Approximately 3 million vehicles use the bridge tunnel system a year, according to Virginia’s transport.
How the Silent Miner Superstar received his nickname
Chessie, the nickname for the boring tunnel machine used in this project, was named by Grace Bentley of the Nandua Secondary School located in Onley. The name returns to the legend of a marine monster who lives deep in Chesapik Bay. Sailors, who claim to have noticed this being half a century ago described the Syps as a long, like a snake being.
