The City of Chesapeake Beach recently held a memorial gathering at the newly renovated Old Campgrounds Park to honor the late Chuck Rutkay, a former City Council member known for his dedication and contributions to the community. In his memory, a Redbud tree was planted by local residents and community members at the Campground Pocket Park on B Street, a scenic space overlooking the Chesapeake Bay.

The Chesapeake Beach Garden Club organized the planting and provided a plaque commemorating Ruttkay’s commitment to the city. Community member Clarence “The Shoe” Shumaker personally planted the tree, a gesture that reflected the close-knit nature of Chesapeake Beach residents. Community members in attendance included Ruttkay’s family and friends, with notable attendees including Jan Ruttkay, Marianne Valaer, Madeleine Blake, Melanie Crowder and Karen Schumaker.

A plaque donated by Tammy Wilhoite, Kelly Norton Gligorovich and Karen Shumaker was installed near the tree, allowing park visitors to reflect on Ruttkay’s contributions. It serves as a reminder of his legacy in the Chesapeake Beach community, where he was valued as a friend, neighbor and former councilman.

In preparation for a June 29 memorial service, the Chesapeake Beach Garden Club arranged to decorate the North Beach Fire Hall with over twenty floral arrangements made from flowers donated by club members at the request of Jan Ruttkay. Flower displays that filled an entire van added a lively and personal touch to the gathering, reflecting the community’s gratitude and remembering Ruttkay’s influence.

This tribute underscores Chesapeake Beach’s commitment to honoring those who have dedicated their lives to improving and nurturing the community.
