Cherokee sheriff Jeff Shaver and chief deputy Josh Samfford recently attended the winter conference of the National Sheriffe Association in Washington, joining 26 other sheriffs from Alabama. The conference provided valuable training and discussions on key law enforcement issues, including a presentation by the Border Tom Homan in illegal immigration.

While in the nation’s capital, sheriff Shaver and chief deputy Samfafford met with Senator Katie Britt, Senator Tommy Tuberville, Congressman Robert Aderholt and Congressman Barry Moore. These meetings focused on providing financing of special projects and solving problems that affect the sheriff’s offices in Alabama.

In addition, Chief Deputy Sumherford and Deputy Gavin Johnson attended the hearing of the Senate Judicial Commission for efforts to combat the spread of an illegal fentanyl, a growing crisis affecting communities across the country.

Sheriff Shaver emphasized the importance of these opportunities, stating: “Meetings like this allow us to collaborate with other sheriffs, to share the best practices and to work together on issues that influence law enforcement. Building strong relationships with our national leaders helps to ensure that our local agencies have the resources and support needed to preserve our communities. “
