The very thought These ordinary materials – rags, metal seals, dressings, straw, linoleum and other utilitarian objects – can be used to perform art, elevates their flash. The Galisto -based harmony Hammond continues to use these materials to oppose the very idea of what art is, inflaming its abstractions with social and political sense.
“All materials have stories, have memories,” says Hammond, a longtime resident of New Mexico and a prominent voice of the feminist art of the 70s of the last century. “I like to think about my work as participating in the story of modern abstraction at the same time, it interrupts and undermines this story.”
The artist, the writer and the most solo exhibition of the curator, Fringe., Open to the Santa Fe site in February and continues in May 19. (Admission is always free.) In the show, the abstractions of mixed media have been in dialogue with its work since the 1970s, effectively blurring the line between two and three-dimensional artistic performance regimes.
Hammond topography uses materials that can be related to binding and restraint, body damage and healing. In Summary Grate # 1Mixed-butal canvas from 2015, dressings grow the surface as stripes in the rock. Red, like blood, flows from the graves that peek the surface.
“The straps abstain, offer binding, bandage, slavery, but they also embrace the body of drawing,” she says. “The fabrics are torn, destroyed, arranged and dashed. There are free edges. The seams are left to appear. Cables and ropes suggest contact opportunities. The paint is used for thread, used as a bird. “
Hammond’s materials and techniques are both aesthetic and symbolic. “Her work actively provokes and violates the dominant historical stories that constantly exclude women and LGBtqia+ individuals,” says website curator Santa Fendi Kaoba.
