Charlton Athletic has signed Alex Gilbert on a loan from Middlesbrough until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder, who is a former youth international in the Republic of Ireland, is the first player to move to Addicks during the winter transfer window.

Gilbert moved to Boro in the summer of 2023 from Brentford, but found his chances at Riverside Stadium Limited.

He made only two championships and the last of his two goals for Boro came on New Year’s Eve in a 1-0 victory in Hull City.

“We were looking to add more quality to the last third and Alex provides this,” Charlton Chief Nathan Jones told the club’s website.

“He comes with a decent genealogy, as a play in a very good championship this season, which trusts us to improve his development.

“We don’t really like to borrow players, but when the opportunity comes up to add true quality like this, we have to take it.”
