Chaps lose at home to rival WT 1-0 – LCU Athletics

Lubbock, Texas (October 23, 2024) Lubbock Christian University fell 1-0 at home to West Texas A&M on Wednesday at the LCU Soccer & Track Complex. The Buffaloes secured their first conference win of the season by dominating this year’s edition of the Shooting Rivalry.

Lubbock Christian fell to 5-5-4 overall and 2-3-2 in Lone Star Conference play after the loss, continuing its struggles at home with a 1-3-3 record. The Chaparrals haven’t secured a home win since beating Adams State 2-0 on Sept. 7. West Texas A&M, meanwhile, improved to 3-6-4 overall and 1-2-3 in conference action, earning their first conference win of the season and their first win since a Sept. 21 game against Hawaii Pacific.

How it happened

Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M were held scoreless in the first half.

After the break, the Chaparrals surrendered the lone goal, leading to the eventual victory for West Texas A&M. The Buffaloes were able to break the scoreless drought in the 57th minute when Philippe Leano was able to collect the rebound off a shot by Matteo Landais, who was credited with the assist.

Despite the narrow defeat, Connor Pettigrew led Lubbock Christian with seven saves and the Chaparrals registered 11 shots, five of them on goal.

  • Pettigrew recorded seven saves for the Chaparrals on the Buffaloes’ 19 total shots, bringing his Lone Star-leading total to 59.
  • Lubbock Christian had five shots on goal for their sixth straight game.

What’s next?

Lubbock Christian will enter the final stretch of its schedule by participating in a back-to-back game, with the first stop coming against Dallas Baptist in Dallas. Dallas Baptist holds a 4-3-6 overall and 3-1-2 Lone Star record, with a 1-0 win over Eastern New Mexico in their last game. The Chaparrals and Patriots already faced each other this season in a Sept. 25 game that ended in a 0-0 tie that did not count toward the Lone Star Conference standings. Lubbock Christian and Dallas Baptist will look to make a late season splash when they have first contact around 7:00 pm from Patriot Soccer Field in Dallas.
