Changes to traffic traffic announced near the Baton Rouge Zoo – WAFB

Baton Rouge, La. (WAFB) – There is a new route for anyone trying to get to the Baton Rouge Zoo.

The East Baton Rouge Parish (BREC) parish Commission and announced on Monday, February 3, that visitors traveling to the Baton Rouge Zoo or Greenwood Community Park on the 19 highway were completed.

According to BREC, the Ministry of Transport and Development in LA, installed to the north and south “without left turn” of the signals for the movement of the new entrance of the park and the zoo on the Rafe Mayer Road Highway. The signs were added to mitigate the impact on the north and south traffic through the LA 19 highway, as new intersection improvements are in design and will be underway and completed in 2026 by DOTD.

To reach the zoo or park, Breck encourages drivers south to turn left on Lavey Lane to Sunshine Road and then turn right to Thomas Road. From Thomas Road, drivers can turn right on Highway 19 and continue to the entrance to the park or zoo for the right turn.

“As important as our safety for visitors to the zoo, we want their path to and from the park to be just as safe and effective,” says Jim Fleshman, director of the zoo of the Brek Rouge Zoo. “We ask you to be patient to construction next year as we continue to improve experience for everyone.”

According to BREC, the intersections of the intersection will include new specialized northern and southern turns, along with a right turn north in the two parks. Other enhancements include extensive new flooring, a new highway pavement, a new right road from the Greenwood Park side and the new traffic signaling. These improvements are funded by DOTD through the federal program to improve highways safety.

A new entry into the Greenwood Park and the Lavey Lane Zoo will be added in 2026, which will create an additional option to enter and exit traffic inside and outside Greenwood Park and the zoo, according to BREC.
