Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones has hit back at Birmingham City manager Chris Davies’ claim that the Addicks have “spent a fortune” in the transfer market, saying not many Championship clubs have invested as much as the Blues.

Despite enjoying just 36 per cent of possession, the Addicks beat Davies’ in-form Birmingham City side 1-0 in their final League One game before the international break.

After the game, Birmingham manager Davies said Charlton’s job for the 90 minutes was to stop the Blues rather than doing anything with the ball.

He also pointed to Charlton’s total spending and suggested the Addicks themselves have spent a fortune as they chase promotion.

Jones, responding to these claims, pointed to Davies’ own spending which he believes is more than many Championship clubs can afford.

“I don’t know what you classify as wealth. We spent more than a lot of Ligue 1 sides, but I wouldn’t call it a fortune.

“We have been very frugal in the transfer market. I don’t like to comment on others.

“Birmingham have spent a fortune but if they can do that then there’s no problem with it from my point of view.

“I don’t want to get into an argument about it.

“We know how much we’ve spent and we can’t spend a fortune because there are restrictions at the club – financial fair play. So we can only spend what we can spend.

Birmingham spent between £20m and £25m in the summer transfer window, with their main sum coming to sign Jay Stansfield from Fulham.
