Can the cold weather cause a cold? – the clinic of Baton Rouge

Bitter winter elements can be brutal in the body. But is there any truth that you can “put” if it is not properly dressed out?

Jesse Bracamonte, a family doctor at Mayo Clinic, explains why colds and other viruses are more common during the winter months.

When your parents told you to put on a coat before going out or catching up, there is a small nucleus of truth in this.

“If you are a little more cold outside, your body’s immune system can just fall a little because it spends extra effort to warm you. This is not all, but in some cases it can predispose you to a cold, “says Dr. Bracamonte.

But, he says, the cold weather itself does not cause the common cold. However, as the winter pace decreases, the chances of spreading a respiratory virus are increased because it is spent more indoors with others.

“When it’s cold outside, people usually gather around the fireplace or around your home. Therefore, if people are sick, it is more likely that you are in close proximity to someone who is sick, thus cold, “says Dr. Bracamonte.

He says that if you make a cold or any of the common viruses that cause the common cold, it is important to remember that it is a virus in most cases, not a bacterial infection, so antibiotics do not usually help. Staying moisturizing, getting a lot of rest and healthy eating are important.

“In most cases, for most healthy people, we call it supportive management: time, rest, chicken soup and just stay away from others is usually the best medicine,” he says.
