It is precisely what they have experienced over the years, the residents of California may suspect that the fires have become more extreme among the warmer and more prone to land climate.

A new book at Science magazine puts this mood of the test, with frightening discoveries: California fires spread almost four times faster in 2020 than in 2001.

The study, author of scientists at the University of Colorado, UC Merced and UCLA, also found that fires increased by 250% faster in 2020 in 2001 in 2001.

“People are pretty good at suppressing all the fires,” says Williams Park, Professor of UCLA and co-author of the study, but “the faster the fire, the easier it can escape from control.”

Although intuitive, the connection between the speed at which fire is spreading and the damage it causes structures and land was difficult to quantify to the latest developments in satellite technology, he said.

Scientists can now draw “trends at the daily growth rate,” he said. Using images of Daily Fire for about 60,000 fires from 2001 to 2020, they were able to determine a link between damage and speed, Williams said.

“During this 20-year study period, fires in the United States really began to move on average faster,” he said. 3% of fires at the fastest daily growth rate is about 90 percent of the property loss during the two decades studied.

“In California, more than most places in the United States are confronted with changes in fire behavior,” Williams said.

Many Californians live in close proximity to flammable vegetation and are increasingly harmed.

The study gave several possible explanations for an increase in fire speed.

“Fires can grow faster due to warming trends, plant transitions to more flushed fuels, or the joint emergence of high winds with increasing ignition associated with humans,” the study is outlined.

Recent fires in California have caused death and destruction and brought the internal insurance industry to the brink of the crisis. With the end of the fire department in 2024, all eyes will be next year.
