CAIRO — Eighth-seeded Cairo-Durham advances to the second round of the Section 2 Class B boys soccer tournament after a 2-1 win over ninth-seeded Patroon Conference rival Coxsackie-Athens on Wednesday night.
Both of Cairo-Durham’s goals came unassisted off Coxsackie-Athens goalie Jacob Grounds. Mustangs senior forward Zander Santerelli opened the scoring in the 28th minute and junior midfielder Chase Kelly broke the tie in the second half in the 63rd minute.
The first half ended in a 1-1 tie as Coxsackie-Athens junior midfielder Joe Perino scored in the 31st minute off an assist from fellow junior midfielder Asa Decker.
The Riverhawks largely outplayed Cairo-Durham in the first half, outscoring the Mustangs 24-17. Cairo-Durham goaltender Jacob Young recorded six saves on the night, while the Riverhawks’ Grounds had 11.
With the win, Cairo-Durham improves to 12-4 and will play again Saturday against top-seeded Mechanicville, the two-time defending sectional champion that received a first-round bye. Coxsackie-Athens finishes its season 11-6.
