Halloween night was full of trick-or-treating at the Sioux Empire on Thursday. Despite the chilly weather, kids and kids at heart in South Dakota dressed up for this spooky season.
Halloween costumes such as witches, vampires and clowns roamed the streets across the state. Even South Dakota’s First Family got into the Halloween spirit. From the looks of South Dakota Governor Kristy Noem’s Instagram and Facebook accounts, she decided to really put on an amazing performance!
South Dakota Governor Noem once again welcomes trick-or-treaters to the Governor’s Residence for delicious Halloween candy. No gimmicks. Like South Dakota governors before her, Governor Noem and her family dressed for the occasion. But before handing out candies to the goons at the governor’s residence, Governor Noem revealed his costume for the evening. Think of a famous Wild West cowgirl…
Just for the day Annie Oakley was taking over the Governor’s Mansion! Annie Oakley was known as an amazing horsewoman and gunner as part of Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show.
Some might say the governor’s choice of suit is a direct hit. Others might say it’s an oversight. However, after doing some research, Annie Oakley has some connections in South Dakota. While on the road with Buffalo Bill Cody and the Wild West Show, she did meet Wild Bill Hickok (played by First Gentleman Brian Noem) and Lakota Sioux leader Sitting Bull. According to the History Channel, Sitting Bull considers Annie an “adopted daughter.” The nickname Sitting Bull given to Annie was “Watanya Cicilla” or “Little Sure Punch”. This ended up being her iconic nickname.
It’s always a fun tradition to see South Dakota governors and their families celebrate Halloween! Last Halloween, Governor Noem and her family dressed up as Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam! Governor Noem also dressed up as country singer Lainey Wilson while working in the office.
Parents, don’t forget to enjoy some candy! You deserve a treat too!
