FLINTON – When Claysburg-Kimmel and Glendale played each other during the regular season, the Bulldogs beat the Vikings 47-0.
When they played again in a District 6 Class 1A quarterfinal game on a frigid Friday night at Dr. Roy F. Baker Field, was much more competitive.
Almost every time the fifth-seeded Bulldogs scored a touchdown or kicked a field goal, the fourth-seeded Vikings responded with a touchdown. But the Bulldogs had another touchdown run, including two by Mark Latieri, who was recovering from an injury, to beat the Vikings 32-22.
“I’m proud of the effort,” Glendale coach Dave “Spank” Trexler said after an emotional meeting with his seniors. “The kids came in with the mindset that they wanted to win this game and they put in the effort. They put themselves in that position and we fell short. I feel for them right now. I know how much it hurts in these situations. But the sun will rise tomorrow and things will make sense.”
“The difference was they didn’t turn the ball over as much,” Claysburg-Kimmel coach Chuck Kasik said. “The first time we played them, everything went right for us. The fact is they are a playoff team and we knew coming here it was going to be a tough game. They played hard. Coach Spank prepares these kids.
The Bulldogs improved to 7-4 and will play top-seeded Bishop Guilfoyle next week.
Play of the game: With time running out in the first half and the Bulldogs leading 9-7 and facing third-and-15 at the Glendale 23, CK quarterback Mason Campagna completed a pass to Remington Diehl just short of the end zone.
But Diehl carried defenders into the end zone and got help from teammates who pushed the pile and Diehl for a touchdown with 1.6 seconds left in the half.
“We talked about it at halftime,” Kasik said. “These are things you usually see on TV. If you’re the team pushing the guy, you sit there cheering and pumping your arms. I kept thinking don’t stop (the play). What a great effort by our kids to get him in.”
Player of the game: Campania rushed for 143 yards on 23 carries and scored on a 32-yard run. He completed 5 of 13 passes for 134 yards and a TD and was intercepted once.
“He had a good night,” Kasik said. “He made some big hits for us and threw some really good pitches.”
Brave effort: The hard-hitting Lattieri ran for 95 yards on 20 carries and scored on runs of 17 and 14 yards.
“We weren’t sure if Latieri was going to play,” Kasik said. “He gutted him because he was injured last week. He played his tail and our kids blocked hard. The difference in the game was the ability to manage the football.”
“It’s as good as a 1-2 punch around,” Trexler said. “We knew Latieri had health problems last week, but we expected him to play and he did some things.
Unsung heroes: The Bulldogs’ offensive line opened holes for 249 yards of offense.
Most important stat: The Bulldogs had two interceptions by Logan Schebeck — once by Landon Woods and once by Jacob Herlein. They also recovered two fumbles.
“When you watch the film, I’m sure it will show that turnovers and penalties were really our Achilles’ heel,” Trexler said.
Kicking: CK’s Nathan Fee kicked field goals of 23 and 30 yards.
Records: Claysburg-Kimmel (7-4), Glendale (6-5).
Next week: Claysburg-Kimmel visits Bishop Guilfoyle in the semifinals. Glendale is ready.
