“Built by black history. Raised by black voices. “

In 2024, the Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) celebrated the month of black history by cursing the Black Book: Community resource designed to celebrate, lift and support the business with black owners in Utah. After a successful debut, we are excited to return an updated version of The Black Book, with previous companies underlined and adding new ones.

During the era of Jim Kri’s laws, racism reached dangerous levels for blacks. Segregation, intolerance and violence were just some of the atrocities that influenced them regularly. The Green Book has become a resource for black travelers to find safe places to supply, eat and get gas. Written by Victor Hugo Green, the Green Book was published from 1936 to 1967 and became a haven for the sufferers. Green was an American mailing worker from Harlem, New York. As someone facing discrimination itself, he saw the need for a driver who allowed black travelers to avoid destinations of social obstacles and racial intolerance. For example, motorists were alerted to Sundown Counds, which required minorities to be out of town before sunset. Black travelers depend on the Green Book to protect themselves from violence and establishments that did not welcome them. Without Green’s 30+ year contribution, there may have been almost no relief for these individuals.

Taking inspiration from this historically significant publication, SEG created the Black Book. While our society has made great progress in equality and justice over the years, there is still a job that needs to be done. The Black Book is a collection that emphasizes the business with black owners in the area of Salt Lake City and Utah. From eating establishments to music producers to makeup artists, the list of black owners business is extensive and diverse. We intend to provide visibility and encouragement by reaching the audience of the Utah hockey club. Last year, the Black Book saw great success in the distribution of awareness and we hope that the updated version continues to do so.

The Black Book will be available at the Utah Hockey Club and the Delta Center apps. There, fans can learn about the individual businesses where they are located, and more basic information for everyone.

As an organization, we recognize our influence on the Utah community (and outside) and want to make our role in the support of where we can. During the play days at Delta Center, we will take the time to recognize the non -profit organizations with which we partner with and how they return to the community.

In SEG, we believe in the power of the community. With the Black Book project, we hope to encourage this power in our hometown and state.
