The Spanish Springs huge season did not transfer to the basketball match of the first State Championship of Cougars.

Sierra Vista defended her state-owned Class 4a Basketball Title by defeating Spanish Springs, 79-65, on Saturday at Pavilion Cox in Las Vegas.

The Spanish sources gave up from the beginning, but fought back to the path with only one halftime, 33-32.

But the cougities could not close the difference in the second half. The mountain lions surpassed the cougars, 24-14 in the third quarter.

Travis Lee led the couges with 20 points, Owen Hensley had 12, and Taner Bowers added 10.

The mountain lions made 16 at 19 free throws, while the cougities were 5 to 8 from the stripes.

Spanish Springs Coach Kyle Penny said the length and physicality of Sierra Vista is the difference in the game on Saturday.

“They have ahead of us tonight, which is probably the first time we have overtaken throughout the year,” Penny said. “They forced us at some turnover. Their 1-3-1 (defense of the zone) affected us a little and this area did not affect us so much throughout the season. The length and speed and speed were good.”

He said the cougars did not receive the easy touches, as they did in the biggest part of the season.

The Spanish Springs ended the season with a total of 24-5, 16-0 in the league. The cougars won 17 consecutive games after their last loss, December 30, at the Peachtree Ridge in the Torrey Pines tournament in southern California.

Cugars have six adults this season. The mountain lions end the season 25-5 as a whole.

“We’ll bring back many good players. Guys who didn’t get on the court much. They can play,” Penny said. “One of the reasons we have such a successful season were our practices. Our boys, whom no one really knows about, they can play. They compete and are ready to take on the next role next year.”

The Spanish Springs tried for their first National Boys Basketball Championship. Sierra Vista has won the state twice. Sierra Vista opened in 2001-02, the same year as the Spanish Springs.
